The Mustard Seed Cottage
Many stories have been forgotten over the centuries but thankfully, some characters continue to live on in the written word. You may not realize that the fairies in William Shakespeare’s A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM were not just figments of Mr. Shakespeare’s bountiful imagination. Oh, no. Chip and Dale Bridge
Who can say just what inspired the design of this little footbridge…the Chinese, Thomas Chippendale (the famed English furniture designer), or ancient Wiggan bridge builders? Some things we’ll never really know. Since the fairy culture is strictly an oral one, architectural renderings and written specifications are nonexistent. But there has been a story, passed down for many generations, of a certain Wiggan builder who had an affinity for designs of a geometric nature. Some say the little sprite influenced the most complicated of Chinese puzzles and that his designs have been observed in much of the Chippendale style of Architecture. Lucky Lutyens Bench
The famed late 19th century Edwardian architect Sir Edwin Landseer Lutyens designed a garden bench similar in style to ours. The story goes that while Sir Edwin worked in close partnership with the esteemed garden designer Gertrude Jekyll he was also closely aligned with the world of Fairy who’s esthetic sensitivities strongly influenced his architectural designs. It should be noted that this particular bench was first discovered in a tiny garden in Lower or Nether Swell, just outside Stow-on-the-Wold in Gloucestershire. Very coincidently, Lutyens was, at the time, in the throws of redesigning Abbotswood at Lower Swell for his clients Mark and Molly Fenwick. Hmm, all good design draws its inspiration from somewhere. Lucky Lutyens! The sweeping curves of the bench are like a lullaby to a fairy, which is why you’ll often catch one taking naps on a Lutyens bench on sunny days.

Grand Entrance Stone Structure with Tool Shed
While many fairies have wings enabling them to take flight, there are still a good many of them who must walk on foot or cloven hoof when they can’t get a lift from a dragonfly or sparrow. The Knocker goblins of Devon built this beautiful stairway garden approach from local quarry stone remarkable for its color and quality. Perfect for any and every fairy garden, the structure has had anti-troll spells cast upon it by mystic fairies of the Northlands (to ward off any unwanted guests). As the Primrose Cottage was designed to be built on a hill (again, to discourage trespassers), this terrace and stairway will lead from the front door of the cottage down into your fairy garden. The bottom of the limestone steps takes it’s residents to a useful tool shed underneath the stairs, which is graced by a pair of weathered arching doors that open for winged gardeners to store tiny garden implements. The four piece structure is comprised of the Primrose pathway (the stone path leading from the front door of the Cottage), a curving left (facing) staircase, a right staircase and a center structure with tiny operational doors which open into a small stone storage room.
